Mole Scanning

Checking your skin for suspicious spots and moles is vital to ensure prompt treatment of skin cancer. With mole mapping you are able to get early detection of concerning moles.

Mole Scanning is a treatment recommended for all patients and clients who are prone to moles and freckles (naevi and ephilides). Those with fair skin are advised to come for mole mapping as a precaution against skin cancer. Furthermore, those with a history of skin cancer are advised to have regular mole assessments.

During a mole mapping, each individual mole or skin discolouration is photographed at close proximity. These multi-layered photographs are then stored electronically for future reference. The progression of a mole in terms of colour, depth, diameter, vascularity and density can then all be monitored and diagnosed.

By taking macro-and microphotographs of your skin, Dr Huskisson can monitor every part of your skin and scalp for abnormal moles and melanoma. Cost per treatment is calculated based on the number of photos taken per treatment.

If any suspicious lesions or spots are found, your doctor may remove them using an incisional biopsy, and send them for further testing.

FAQ: Mole scanning

1How does Mole scanning work?
Mole scanning is a treatment recommended for all patients and clients who are prone to moles and freckles (naevi and ephilides). Each individual mole or skin discolouration is photographed at close proximity. The multi-layered photographs are stored electronically for future reference and progression. Information gleaned from one photograph includes colour, depth, diameter, vascularity and density – all necessary for an accurate diagnosis and documenting of lesion progression. Dr Huskisson then analyses the information obtained, and a treatment plan is put together.
2What are the costs involved with Mole Scanning?
Excluding the consultation fee: Scanning of 10 or less moles: R400; and more than 10 moles: R600.
